Yuka Takaoka | Social Media Sensation After Attempting to Murder Boyfriend

As with anything, social media has its pros and cons. The good things about it are that you can keep connected with family and friends close and far away. You are also able to meet people from all walks of life living all over the world. A couple of cons is the sense that others have it better than you because of the snippets they portray of themselves. Another one is valuing looks above personality and not caring about the bad things that someone does cause of it. This is what happened with Yuka Takaoka. She became a social media star after almost stabbing her boyfriend to death.  

What Happened on May 23, 2019?

On May 23, 2019, 21-year-old Yuka Takaoka grabbed a kitchen knife and sliced her 20-year-old boyfriend Runa, who she lived with, stomach open. The police arrived at the apartment building, where they found Yuka sitting in the lobby with blood covering her hands and legs. She would say to them, “I did not want to go anywhere, so I sat down at the outside staircase. I did not call emergency services because I intended to die after watching him die from the stabbing.”

An apartment tenant told the media that “The walls of the elevator were covered in blood, and the buttons for the third and fourth floors were also smeared in blood as if a bloody hand had touched them.” When she was arrested, she flashed an evil grin while she sat in the back of a patrol car. 

What would cause her to stab her boyfriend in such a way? Well, the two had just started living together three days prior. On the day of the stabbing, the boyfriend, who seems to have remained anonymous, had come home late. Yuka went through his smartphone and found a picture of him a little too close with another woman. This seems to have angered her to the point that she grabbed the knife and stabbed him while sleeping. 

“I was sad and seeking to die, and I thought how I would like to go about it,” she said. “I thought I would kill him because I thought that was how I could be with him. I thought that expressions such as ‘I like you’ and ‘I would like to be with you would become a reality if I die.”

Another image later appeared of a bloody Yuka smoking a cigarette while sitting on the body of Runa. 

Caught

After the murder, Yuka became a social media sensation because she reminded people of a “Yandere.” From Animanga Wiki, it states:

Yandere (ヤンデレ) is a Japanese term for a person who is initially very loving and gentle to someone (or at least innocent) before their devotion becomes destructive in nature, often through violence and/or brutality.

Similar to Yuno Gasai, Yuka wrote a memo in the form of a diary entry:

“I want to be a tragic heroine. How is it possible for him to look at a woman other than me? I know killing [him] is for the best. If I kill [him], it will be eternal, and there will be no pain [after]. I don’t need anything other than you.”

Yuka Takaoka was sentenced to three years and six months in prison. The judge told her that the crime was selfish. Her ex-boyfriend Runa seems to have sued her and received 5 million yen, which is a little under $50,000. He told the court, “If possible, I want people to be able to lead a normal life rather than paying for their sins,” Runa told the court at the opening of the trial on Tuesday.

Runa was unconscious in the hospital for five days but miraculously recovered. He posted on Twitter:

“Sorry guys, but I survived this one. I’ll be going to work tomorrow and waiting there for my first request.”

Closing Remarks

Yuka will be released in 2024. Hopefully, while she is in there, they can do some serious mental health work with her. She is young, but even so, she yells at him, breaks his phone, but slicing him open is a bit too much. As someone older, I would tell her to not even do that. Just say goodbye and find someone better. Runa, whose hostname is now Phoenix Luna, was wrong for cheating on Yuka, but that doesn’t mean he deserved to die. The social media obsession with Yuka is what is wrong with social media. Why would you be obsessed and defending a woman who stabbed her boyfriend while he slept? Because she was pretty? Cause she reminds you of a manga/anime character type? I am a huge anime lover, but in no way when I saw Future Diary or School Days did I think, “Wow, the yandere type is so cool.” I felt sorry for her, but I also thought she was wrong for what she was doing.
